Half a Thousand.

I wrote 500 words of my novel yesterday. Yes, yes, I can hear bodies thudding to the ground around the globe in a faint.

500 words might not be much in the great scheme of things but they are still 500 more words than no words at all. And it is long time since I worked at it.

Besides, they were of a scene that I had been thinking of for ages and worrying that it was not one to which I could do justice. However, it has worked out well.

It takes the book into dark territory. So it is important.

On a separate topic, and briefly as I have to go to work in a few minutes, has anyone read Metropole by Ferenc Karinthy? Not an easy read, but worth the effort. I shall post a review later.

Thank you for your encouragement, Caroline.

I was talking to a fellow writer at work, though he is a playwright, about this issue of becoming spooked by an important scene and the endless prevarication that goes on before one can get down to it.

I was, of course, fishing to find out if he had had the same problem.

He did. Relief all round. It's not just me.

500 words a day, five days a week, adds up to a decent novel in 32 weeks--which equates roughly to school term-time,leaving you the summer, Easter and Christmas holidays off. It's also far more fiction than I've written for a while, and I am envious. Well done, you. Now go back and do it another 159 times and you'll have a full novel, you clever thing!

I am beginning to feel I should prepare my Oscar acceptance speech very shortly.

How encouraging you are Jane.
